An estimate, not a quote. Circuit size follows NEC 625.42: EV charging is a continuous load, so the breaker is sized at 125% of the charger's rating. Real range per hour varies with temperature, battery state and driving. Your install also depends on the run from the panel, breaker spaces and your city's requirements. JP Electrical Solutions Inc., CSLB #1092719.

Your car sets the limit

Every EV has an onboard charger that caps how fast it takes AC power. If yours tops out at 7.7 kW, a 48 amp wall unit charges no faster than a 32 amp one.

The 125% rule

EV charging is a continuous load, so the breaker is sized at 125% of the charger's rating. A 40 amp charger needs a 50 amp circuit. That's NEC 625.42, and it's what the inspector checks.

Overnight is plenty

You have about 12 hours between getting home and leaving again. For most drivers a Level 2 charger replaces a full day's driving in that window, easily.

SCE Charge Ready Home: if you're an SCE customer, this program can pay toward the panel upgrade and 240 volt circuit for an EV charger: up to $4,200 for income-qualified households, or up to $2,100 in designated disadvantaged communities. Most households won't qualify, but it's worth checking at evhome.sce.com before you budget. Program details as of August 2026 and subject to change.
